The History and events leading up to and including the

Consecration of the Lodge 5th December 1967

 

Extracts taken from the minutes of the first meeting held at the 'Bugle Hotel' Titchfield 5th April 1967.

Meeting commenced at 8.20pm 5th April 1967 in the club room with W.Bro. R.G Nobes P.P.J.G.D.P. Master Duke of Connaught Lodge 1834 in the chair.

The Chairman explained that a meeting of Master Masons had previously been held at an earlier date to ascertain if a new lodge was required in the district and as a result, the present meeting had been called.

To qualify as a founder member a brother must have been a Master Mason for three and there must be sufficient members interested to justify a petition.

He then asked how many present would qualify……………………

The Chairman then asked how many present were prepared to be founders if the fee was between ten and seventy guineas and the subscription four to five guineas per year. All accented.

Bro J. Hawkins and Bro S Harris read names of brethren who had expressed interest …….

The Chairman said that as there were twenty to twenty five brethren interested…………………….

The Duke of Connaught Lodge was prepared to be a sponsor and the matter could therefore go forward.

He further said that the Lodge would be known as the Titchfield Abbey Lodge,

A short discussion then took place regarding appointment of executive officers and Bro J. Hawkins accepted the office of Secretary. Other officers appointed were W. Bro. A. Wilkins PPAGDC  Director of Ceremonies, Bro. H Morgan Junior Warden, and Bro. D Sanders Inner Guard.

The Chairman suggested that a donation of ten shillings per head would assist the treasurer to meet various commitments until the new Lodge came into being.

W. Bro. G Paterson reigning Master of St. Denny’s Lodge was asked if he would accept the office of first Worshipful Master and he expressed his thanks for the honor conferred on him.

W. Bro Nobbs promptly vacated the chair in favor of the Worshipful Master designate.

Bro S. Harris said he had made enquires of the secretary of Fareham Masonic Hall and the only vacant dates are the third Wednesday, fourth Tuesday or fourth Friday in each month……………….

W. Bro Nobbs said that this appeared to be as far as the meeting could go at the moment and suggested that a sub-committee be appointed at the next meeting, to wait on the Provincial Grand Secretary at Hampshire Terrace for guidance in preparing a petition etc,…………………….

Extracts from meeting held;

Bugle Hotel, Titchfield, 21 April 1967

Worshipful Bro Paterson said that it was not possible to use Masonic Hall Fareham on the forth Friday of each month and therefore they would be held on the third Wednesday.

Bro Hawkins, Treasurer, asked if it was necessary to hold nine meetings, after discussions………………………

W. Bro. Wilkins Director of Ceremonies said that the ritual used would be a modified form of Emulation……………………………

Worshipful Bro. Paterson asked the Secretary to read the list of Officers already appointed, asked the Brethren present if any wished to take the vacant offices. After discussion the majority of the vacancies were filled.

They are;

Extracts from meeting Provincial Grand Lodge, Hampshire Terrace 3rd May 1967.

 

To wait on Worshipful Brother Edmunds Asst Prov. Grand Secretary. 11.0am Wednesday Sub-Committee.

W. Bro. Nobbs informed W.Bro. Edmunds that a number of well known Master Masons in the Titchfield area had expressed a wish to form a new Masonic Lodge………………………………

The proposed Initiation fee of 35 guineas and subscription about 5 guineas.

W. Bro. Edmunds said that Provincial Grand Lodge is against initiation fees being too high………………………

He suggested lowering initiation fee to 30 guineas and increase the annual subscription, as initiation fees should be set aside for charity.

It would be necessary to make an application called a ‘Prayer’, for recommendation by the Provincial Grand Master.

A petition signed by all founder members ………………………………..

The sponsoring Lodge would give notice in its agenda that it proposed to sponsor the new Lodge …………………………

The complete petition forwarded to the Provincial Grand Secretary, if approved should be possible for the consecration to take place in November.

The first seven names on the petition would appear on the warrant of the Lodge those being the Worshipful Master, his two wardens and four others.

Once the date of Consecration is fixed the usual procedure would follow, rehearsal of founders, Provincial Officers etc…………………………….

The Consecration. Refreshments. Installation, Dinner.

The Lodge to entertain the 23 Provincial Officers who would take part.

Design of Lodge badge must be submitted to Provincial Grand Lodge, not to take the form of a shield, crest or family coat of arms. Not necessary to have a founders jewel.

Extracts from Founders meeting held Wednesday 28th June 1967 Masonic Hall Fareham.

 

W. Bro G. Paterson Worshipful Master Designate in the chair.

The Chairman asked the Secretary to introduce the representatives of Fareham Masonic Hall Ltd ………………………………

Explain how the Masonic Hall was controlled by the company and the owners, Lodge of Harmony No309.

Charge for the use of the hall for all Lodge meetings, General Purpose Committee and one Rehearsal was £1 per capita.

W.Bro Hammond explained the use of furniture and equipment in the Temple, and that he could cater for refreshments. Outside caterers could be arranged.

With regards to the Consecration he could seat up to a maximum of 180.

W.Bro. A Wilkins thanked W.Bro. Hammond and Bro Wiseman.

Worshipful Master asked all Founder Members to sign the Petition.

Bro. W Hanson said he now found he was unable to be Founder Member because he had not been raised the required 3 years.

Bro. J. Munce produced a sketch of the badge for the Lodge which had been prepared by a friend from Southampton College of Art …………………

Worshipful Master Designate said that it was the wish of the Committee those Founders would sign a covenant for charity instead of having a Founders badge. (Note from administrator; 2 Founders Jewels have been found) Click here to see Lodge Photo's

Extracts from Steering Committee meeting held Wednesday 13th September 1967 Bugle Hotel Titchfield.

 

The Secretary said the Petition had been placed before Grand Lodge that day (13th Sept), he also said that he had been in touch with the Asst Prov G. Secretary who advised that the Consecration should take place in January for two reasons, 1 to avoid having to ask for dispensation and 2 to avoid paying dues for one month.

The Committee then discussed the work required for all Officers…………

Bro. A. Freemantle said that he was very conscious of the fact he was Asst Dir. Of Ceremonies whilst being a Master Mason, he offered to stand down. All present expressed their confidence.

The Secretary read the names of the proposed Officers and discussion regarding Stewards, 4 was agreed.

The Secretary asked that Bro. Sambrook be approached regarding the Office of Asst Secretary.

W. Bro Wilkinson proposed that the General Purpose Committee should be appointed…………

W.Bro. Nobbs P.P.J.G.D proposed a sub-committee to draw up Lodge bye-laws………

Secretary was given authority to order Officers collars and cuffs…………..

W. Master Designate asked what furniture etc had been promised, Bro S. Harris would present the Banner and Bro’s. D and R Sanders the tracing board. See Banner drawing click here

Treasurer Bro. J Hawkins asked for resolutions to be passed regarding bank account to be opened, signatories agreed and general banking business ……………………

Extracts from Founder Members meeting held Wednesday 27th September 1967 Bugle Hotel Titchfield.

 

The Secretary informed the Brethren the thoughts of the Asst Prov G. Secretary regarding the date of Consecration and it was agreed to apply for the 17th January 1968

The Chairman asked the Secretary to read the proposed bye laws for the Lodge, after discussion they were amended to ………………………

The Chairman said there was still a few Officers to be filled and asked the Secretary to read the list so far………………………

The Chairman recalled that it had been agreed that Officers would purchase their own collars and jewels and would present them to the Lodge………………….

It was agreed that a sub committee be appointed to deal with arrangements for the Consecration…………………..

Bro. B Newbury said he would present the Poinyard to the Lodge and W.Bro. J Winteridge the Cushion for the V.O.S.L

Extracts from Steering Committee meeting held Monday 16th October 1967 Bugle Hotel Titchfield.

 

The Secretary informed the committee that the Worshipful Dep. Prov. Grand Master was unable to carry out the Consecration in January but could do so in December or March.

The only date available at Fareham Masonic Hall was 5th December; the committee approved an application for this date to be forwarded.

Extracts from Minutes of the third Regular Meeting held Wednesday 21st February 1968 Fareham Masonic Hall.

 

Letter from the Secretary of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls expressing thanks for the number of Covenants taken out by members of the Lodge on behalf of the 1974 Festival.

Letter from the Secretary and House Governor of the Royal Masonic Hospital expressing thanks to all members of the Lodge for donations received and Covenants promised towards the funds of the Hospital.

 

Extracts from Minutes of the sixth Regular Meeting held Wednesday 15th May 1968 Fareham Masonic Hall.

The Secretary pointed out that the Warrant of the Lodge had been framed by the kind offices of Bro. E.W Draper and was now hanging on the wall of the Lodge.

 

 

Extracts from Minutes of the seventh Regular Meeting held Wednesday 16th October 1968 Fareham Masonic Hall.

 

Worshipful Master G.H Paterson called the Brethren to order and asked W.Bro. Bridgewater P.G. Chaplain of Grand Lodge of Prince Edward Island if he would dedicate the Banner of the Lodge and on assenting to do so, accepted the Gavel and occupied the Masters Chair.

The Worshipful Master his Wardens and Brethren of the Lodge retired from the Lodge and were readmitted in procession with the veiled Banner carried by Bro. S. Harris who was presenting it to the Lodge. The hymn ‘Praise my soul the King of Heaven’ was sung. The Banner was unveiled by W.Bro. Wheeler I.P.M. and the Dedication Chaplain recited the Prayer of Dedication. The Worshipful Master then resumed the Chair and Bro. S. Harris presented the Banner to him on behalf of the Lodge. The Dedicating Chaplain then addressed the Brethren, the Dedicating Hymn was sung and after the Patriarchal Blessing the Lodge resumed its labour.

The Worshipful Master thanked W.Bro. R.J Nobbs for carrying out the Ceremony, Bro.S.P Harris for his generosity in presenting the Banner to the Lodge, W.Bro. O’Dell for the splendid work and artistry in preparing the Banner and W.Bro E.R Bridgewater for the wonderful way in which he carried out the Dedication Ceremony also W.Bro. Mew for the rendering of Holy Writ.

 

Extracts from Minutes of the first Regular Meeting 2nd year held Wednesday 19th February 1969 Fareham Masonic Hall.

 

The Secretary apologised to the Worshipful Master and W.Bro. H Wheeler for omitting to mention in the minutes of the November meeting the presentation to the Lodge, of a Case of Working Tools for all degrees by W.Bro. H. Wheeler P.P.S.G.D.
